US lawmakers announce a trillion-dollar infrastructure bill
US senators have presented a bipartisan trillion-dollar plan to invest in roads, bridges, ports, high-speed internet and other infrastructure, expected to be approved by the Senate within days, becoming the largest public-project legislation in America in decades.
The massive package is a target that has eluded Congress for years and is a priority for US President Joe Biden of Democrats, who on Sunday called it the largest investment of its kind in a hundred years.
Senators said the 2,702-page bill includes spending $550 billion in five years on projects including roads, railroads and electric car charging stations, as well as another $450 billion previously approved.
"I think we can process the relevant amendments quickly and have this bill passed within days," Senate Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said of the bill after it was announced.
Last month, the US House of Representatives approved a $715 billion land transportation and water infrastructure bill.
