Dow Jones closes at a record high

The Dow Jones Industrial Average on Wall Street closed at a record high on Wednesday, May 5, while the Nasdaq Index gave up the gains it recorded earlier in the session, to close in red.

Energy and basic materials stocks continued their momentum this week leading the inter-sector gains in the S & P500 index.

Shares of utility companies and real estate companies were the main decliners.

The Dow Jones ended the trading session, up 96.99 points, or 0.28%, to 34,230.02 points, while the benchmark S & P500 index increased 2.93 points, or 0.07%, to close at 4,167.59 points.

The Nasdaq Composite Index, which is heavily weighted by technology stocks, closed 51.08 points, or 0.37%, to 13,582.43 points.
