The S&P 500 closes at a new record high
The S&P 500 index rose on Thursday in Wall Street trading, achieving the goal of concluding its best performance in the first quarter of the current year in five years.
The S&P 500 comprehensive market index rose by 0.2%.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 63 points, or 0.2%. While the Nasdaq Composite Index remained unchanged.
During the quarter, the S&P 500 rose about 10.3%. It is on track for its best first-quarter gain since 2019, when it rose 13.1%.
The 30-stock Dow Jones Index rose 5.7% during the period, tracking its strongest first-quarter performance since 2021 when it advanced 7.4%. In turn, the Nasdaq index has increased by 9.3% during the quarter so far.
On a monthly basis, the S&P 500 rose 3.2%. The Nasdaq and Dow Jones are ahead by 2% and 2.2%, respectively.
Nvidia led the gains during the quarter, as the AI craze showed no signs of slowing down. The stock is up 83% during the quarter and 15% in March alone.
The early 2024 rally lifted major US stock indexes to record levels.
On Wednesday, the S&P 500 jumped to a new all-time closing high.
