The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell more than expected last week, while layoffs fell to a 21-year low in June as companies stuck to their employees amid a labor shortage.

The US Labor Department said first-time government jobless claims fell 51,000 to a seasonally adjusted 364,000 for the week ending June 26.

But the pace of decline is lighter than in May, when orders fell below 400,000 for the first time since March 2020, when non-essential businesses were forced to close to slow the first wave of COVID-19.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast 390,000 orders in the latest week.

In a second report, the company Challenger, Gray & Christmas, to help employees transition to new jobs, said that layoffs announced by employers in the United States fell 16.7% to 20,476 in June, the lowest level since June 2000.
