On Monday, the US Supreme Court paved the way for a New York City prosecutor to obtain former President Donald Trump's tax returns and other financial records as part of a criminal investigation, dealing a blow to Trump's efforts to conceal details of his finances.

Without comment, judges rejected Trump's request to suspend a ruling by a lower court on October 7 directing the former Republican accountancy firm Mazars USA to comply with a grand jury summoning order set up by Manhattan County Attorney General Cyrus Vance. democratic.

"The work continues," Vance said in a statement issued after the court action. Vance previously said in a letter to Trump's attorney that his office would be able to immediately enforce the subpoena if judges reject Trump's request.

A lawyer for Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Supreme Court, made up of nine judges, including six from the conservative movement, of whom Trump has appointed three, has already made the case in the dispute, as it rejected Trump's claims in July that he was immune from criminal investigations as president.

During his four years in office, Trump refused to disclose his tax returns, unlike all American presidents recently. The affidavits could provide details about his fortune and the activities of the Trump Organization, his family's real estate company.
