Erdogan appoints Hafiza Ghaya, a governor, to the Central Bank of Turkey

The Turkish Official Gazette said that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan appointed Hafiza Ghaya Arkan, a financial executive in the United States, as head of the Turkish Central Bank.

The Official Gazette also stated that Erdogan appointed her predecessor, Shihab Qafji Oglu, as head of the Banking Regulation and Supervision Authority.

Erkan, former co-CEO of First Republic Bank and managing director of Goldman Sachs, met newly appointed Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek in Ankara on Monday.

The meeting came after Erdoğan was re-elected on May 28 as President of Turkey, extending his rule into decade.

Erkan's career spans Wall Street and corporate boardrooms, and she holds a Ph.D. in financial engineering from Princeton University.

In her early forties, Erkan became the fifth head of the Central Bank of Turkey in four years

And she worked at First Republic Bank from 2014 to 2021 in positions that included president, board member and chief investment officer, before she resigned in a sudden move more than a year ago.

Erkan also served on the board of directors of Marsh McLennan, a Fortune 500 company, and was appointed CEO of Greystone, a real estate investment and financing company, last year.
