US jobless claims rise to the highest level since January, at 218,000
The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly rose last week, but the labor market remains underemployed, with the number of Americans on the jobless list in early May hitting the lowest level since 1969.
The US Department of Labor said Thursday, May 19, that applications for government unemployment benefits filed for the first time rose 21,000 to 218,000, at a revised pace in light of seasonal factors for the week ending May 14, the highest level since January.
Economists polled by Reuters had expected 200,000 orders for the week.
